The Land’s End to John O’Groats Challenge

The challenge was to cycle just under 1,000 miles from Lands End to John O Groats which is the length of the United Kingdom ….in 13 days. .

This is no mean feat given Andrew has no right leg, a curved spine, short arms, no elbows or radius bones. He undertook the challenge on a torque assisted hand-bike, which means that it has an electric motor that replicates the effort he puts in. By no means can he sit and press a switch and propel himself to John O Groats, he will have to work every pedal cycle of the way!

Andrew decided to take on this challenge to commemorate the 60 year anniversary of the production of the drug thalidomide, as he is (in his words) a ‘product’ (not a victim) of the drug.

Also his late brother had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in January 2019.  Hence the decision was made to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, Bloodwise and MacMillan Cancer Support.

He is a true optimist, brushing over the severity of his limitations, saying that you have to make the best of your situation and circumstances, and overcome what’s put in front of you. To him, life has never been an obstacle, and with this inspirational outlook he decided to challenge himself to undertake this epic adventure.

Mellow Jersey supported him and were honoured to be helping him on this inspirational journey. The route was formulated to suit Andrew’s requirements i.e. providing the most direct route from LE to JOG, travelling on the flatter terrain where possible.

The challenge was completed raising over £28k for cancer charities.
